My Story

On Friday 27th March 2009, I went to see my GP because I had headaches and blurred vision for a few days. The doctor took one look at me and straight away rang up the Children’s Ward at Colchester General Hospital. The doctors at Colchester took a blood test and we had to wait a few hours for the results. When I got the results, my platelets were extremely low (they were only 1!), so I had a transfusion.

Normal platelets: 40+ (should be way higher – in the hundreds!)
Transfuse below: 8

The doctor told me I needed to go to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridge first thing the next morning by ambulance. Then we knew something was wrong.

The doctors at Addenbrooke’s told me I had Leukemia, but after I had a bone marrow test they found I had something much rarer and just as bad called Aplastic Anaemia. I also got diagnosed with Benign Intracranial Hypertension (pressure in my head) which is better now.
